With many different e-commerce options out there, it can be tricky to decide which is best for your company. Use this guide to compare three of the big names – Prestashop, Shopify, and Magento.
Prestashop is an e-commerce solution that is self-hosted. It is beneficial because it offers over 41 languages, is easy to install, and can be customized. Prestashop also has lower average cost for monthly maintenance, and it contains over 310 features, including SEO, marketing, analytics and reporting, localization, shipping and payments, and site management. On the downside, it lacks a built-in tool for exporting and its importing tool is limited. Prestashop is best for small businesses.
Shopify is a fully hosted e-commerce solution, which means it is easy to use and set up. In addition, Shopify is fairly inexpensive, comes with many different free and paid themes, and provides excellent user support. The cons to Shopify include a lack of an exporting tool, fewer features than other platforms, and limited customization abilities. Shopify is also beneficial for small businesses.
Magento offers multiple options for different types of businesses – Open Source (previously known as Community Edition), and Commerce (previously called Enterprise Edition). Both Magento Open Source and Commerce editions are self-hosted. Multiple editions allow Magento to work for businesses of any size; however, these advanced features are much more expensive than other platforms and often require a steep learning curve. Magento is very customizable, SEO friendly, offers advanced options for inventory and reporting, and provides a wide range of templates and third-party integrations.
With just a short summary of each, it is easy to see the benefits of each system. Our personal favorite is Magento simply because of the ability to grow your website, the access to third-party integrations, and the acceptance of custom development. Which system fits you? The choice is yours!
